Academic Career & Executive Search is pleased to assist Oregon Health & Science University, School of Nursing in their search for a Senior Associate Dean for Research.

 

This position collaborates with and advises the Dean on matters entailing the portfolio development of nursing science, sustaining the research enterprise through grant and other forms of extramural funding, overseeing an array of services to support new and experienced research faculty in the conduct, dissemination, and translation of new knowledge to both academic and service-based stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with federal regulations and research integrity.  The Senior Associate Dean has primary interface with the Office of Research at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), and represents the School of Nursing’s (SON) research mission throughout OHSU.  Further, the Senior Associate Dean advocates for appropriate resources to support the research mission of the SON, including assisting the Dean in cultivating private, foundation, and business donors to support faculty research and PhD students. The Senior Associate Dean maintains an active program of research and national recognition as a leader in her/his research field.

 

KEY RESULT AREAS:                                                             

 

Research Administration

  • Establishes strategic direction and program functions for the research mission, building upon and aligning with existing strengths and strategic priorities in the SON and OHSU
  • Advocates for adequate resources to support various research programs, including space, supplies, technology, software, and other supports
  • Engages with the University, local, regional, and national research communities to represent nursing’s research agenda and inform planning with regard to research priorities
  • Advocates for researchers within and outside of the SON
  • Promotes research and scholarship within and outside of the SON
  • Monitors faculty development and progression to higher academic ranks
  • Works with Program Directors to ensure that faculty’s research is visible and valued and that grant deadlines are recognized
  • Offers mentorship and critique of research-related scholarship
  • Maintains and fosters new community partnerships to facilitate research
  • Prepares budget in accordance with strategic direction and program functions
  • Fosters improvement science inquiry in collaboration with the OHSU Hospital and Health System

 

Academic Research

  • Advocates for research within all programs and courses of study
  • Promotes research and scholarship within the student body
  • Advocates for  doctoral student research and research funding in collaboration with the PhD Program Director
  • Promotes opportunities for OHSU nursing visibility at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Academy of Nursing (AAN), and Western Institute of Nursing (WIN), interdisciplinary research forums, and other events/mechanisms to advance nursing research
  • Identifies faculty and students with potential for careers in research and facilitates connections for development and other opportunities
  • Fosters colloquia and other scholarly opportunities

 

Academic Scholarship

  • Conducts research within area of personal interest and mentors others in same
  • Maintains an active scholarly portfolio, including publishing in respected journal, writing grants, speaking at professional conferences, and other high profile peer-reviewed events

 

Human and Fiscal Resource Management

  • Establishes faculty research standards and ensures compliance with federal, state, and university requirements for research and research integrity
  • Determines developmental gaps and provides for faculty development to optimize the strength of our research potential
  • Provides administrative oversight for all statewide faculty research initiatives

 

Administrative Oversight and Functions

  • Serves on the Dean’s Executive Council and other relevant councils and committees at the SON serves on university councils and committees relevant to the research mission
  • Maintains an active presence in all locations where research is developed and conducted
  • Participates in budgeting and forecasting activities; monitors and ensures compliance with strategic, operational, and budget plans
  • Supervises key faculty, professional and support staff that are inherent in the research and grant management environment
  • Prepares professional communications that are critical to the research and grant functions
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean

 

Qualifications

  • Earned research doctorate in nursing preferred (candidates with other health-related research doctorates may be considered); five or more years of progressive experience in higher education with an emphasis in the conduct of research and grant management; eligible for rank at the Associate or Professor level
  • Demonstrated  expertise in research development, grant writing, grant management, policy development and implementation and public speaking
  • Strong program of research with demonstrated interdisciplinary research collaborations
  • Demonstrated success as a Principal Investigator of peer-reviewed federal and foundation research grants
  • Prior experience as NIH reviewer or with other externally-funded reviews
  • Substantial record of peer-reviewed research publications
  • History of success in mentoring investigators at all levels of experience
  • Demonstrated  expertise in setting performance standards, developing metrics, and in program evaluation applied to the research enterprise
  • Ability to serve as an effective liaison in geographically-diverse settings and across the health care continuum
  • Knowledge of and ability to generate revenue and manage budgets with varying degrees of complexity
