About the Medical University of South Carolina:

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has grown from a small private medical school founded in 1824 into one of the nation’s top academic health science centers, with a 700-bed medical center (MUSC Health) and six colleges. As South Carolina’s only comprehensive academic health center providing a full range of programs in the biomedical sciences, MUSC is engaged in activities statewide. Its campus is located on more than 80 acres in the city of Charleston, with an overall population of about 13,000 clinicians, faculty, staff and students. Nearly 3,000 students in six colleges (Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy) study for degrees at the baccalaureate, master's, doctoral, and other professional levels. The university also provides residency training for more than 700 graduate health professionals. The teaching staff is comprised of more than 1,700 full and part-time faculty.

About the College of Health Professions:

The largest of the six colleges at MUSC with 793 students, 20.1% are underrepresented minority students, the College offers 12 degree programs from bachelor- to doctoral-level, with many ranked among the best in the country and faculty members well-recognized for their excellence as educators, clinicians and researchers, and leaders in inter-professional education.

With high-tech teaching and research facilities, CHP’s strategic design allows for long-term stability and growth within these core degree programs: anesthesia for nurses, cardiovascular perfusion, health administration and policy, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, and physical therapy. Newly developed laboratories include a Motion Analysis Lab, a Neurophysiology Assessment Lab, and an Integrated Physiology Lab.

About the Division of Anesthesia for Nurses (AFN):

The AFN program has a long history of academic excellence and innovation. The program boasts: 93% first time pass rate on the National Certification Exam for Nurse Anesthetists as compared with the national average of 84.8%, 100% overall pass rate, 100% employment rate, and 97% graduation rate.

The AFN program was one of first 43% of nurse anesthesia programs to obtain approval to offer the entry-level clinical doctorate. The AFN faculty recognized that graduates must be prepared to meet the healthcare needs of patients and the public through additional education in evidence-based practice, healthcare policy, leadership, and managing change. Students and faculty have been very successful in the areas of research and scholarship with active involvement in the South Carolina Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists.

AFN graduates are highly sought after and go on to practice in diverse clinical environments from Level 1 Trauma Centers to independent CRNA practices and the military.
