The next Chair for the Department of Developmental Dentistry joins a top, nationally recognized School of Dentistry with outstanding state-of-the-art facilities and advanced dental technology, offering an environment that supports the finest in multispecialty patient care and research. Solidly funded and well resourced, the School of Dentistry is uniquely situated among the 14 UT sister institutions on an expanding and growing campus with 10 new buildings. The rapidly growing research and clinical enterprises offer unlimited opportunities for innovative research and collaborations across campus with the other schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Biomedical Sciences and Public Health. UT Health San Antonio has ranked 1st in Texas and 7th in the country for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding with research efforts producing some of the most influential programs in modern dentistry.

The ideal candidate has an outstanding record of academic excellence, leadership and mentoring, and clinical expertise. Additionally, the next Chair has led in a matrixed environment with proven success in the administration of dental education, including growing academic programs, and operational and financial management of dental clinics. 

This position reports to the Dean and is the academic administrative leader for the department. It is a full-time, tenure-track position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • DDS/DMD from a CODA accredited school or equivalent foreign training
  • Eligible for dental licensing in the state of Texas
  • Current rank of Associate Professor with at least four years in rank -or- Professor eligible for an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 
  • Board certification or board eligibility
  • Record of administration in dental education including experience in clinical operations and financial management

Established in 1959, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (dba: UT Health San Antonio), one of six health institutions in The University of Texas System, is the major source of health professions education and life sciences research in South Texas and is a major center for patient care. School of Dentistry, Department of Developmental Dentistry 

Founded in 1970, the School of Dentistry graduated its first class of 14 members in 1974 and has since risen to a level of national and international distinction.  Today, the school offers 18 degrees and programs with extensive clinical experience including a highly regarded D.D.S. program, bachelor’s and online master’s options in dental hygiene and postgraduate certificates in most dental specialties and international dental programs. The School of Dentistry consistently ranks at the top of all schools of dentistry in the country and is currently ranked 7th in the country for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding among 48 public and private dental schools, according to the Blue Ridge Institute for Biomedical Research, an independent nonprofit organization. In addition, the school received $11,258,229 in federal funding from the NIH in 2022, which contributed to its nearly $35 million in total research grants awarded during that fiscal year. 

One of five departments in the School of Dentistry, the Department of Developmental Dentistry is comprised of the divisions of pediatric dentistry, orthodontics and craniofacial development. In addition to participating in the teaching of the DDS program, the department administers several outstanding advanced education programs: pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. The department also has a strong record of research in craniofacial development, clinical sciences and public health. Outstanding patient care facilities exist in the department’s three clinical sites, located on the main campus of the university, in south San Antonio and in Laredo, Texas. The rapidly growing clinical and research enterprises of UT Health San Antonio provide unlimited possibilities for collaborations across campus with the other five schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Public Health and Graduate Biomedical Sciences.
 
Living in the Area

San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the United States and the second-largest city in Texas, with a population of more than 1.4 million. Located in south-central Texas, the city is the seat of Bexar County and is 1.5 hours southwest of Austin. San Antonio has a rich cultural heritage, influenced by its Spanish and Mexican roots. The city is home to the famous River Walk, a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River lined with restaurants and connecting several historical sites including the Alamo.  San Antonio hosts numerous festivals and events that celebrate its diverse history and vibrant arts scene and has numerous parks, museums and educational opportunities making it an appealing city to live and visit.  

San Antonio is known for its affordability with its relatively low cost of living compared to other major U.S. cities. The cost of living in San Antonio is almost 9% lower than the national average and housing is ~25% less expensive. The primary industries in San Antonio are healthcare and military. The presence of several military bases, including Joint Base San Antonio, contributes significantly to the local economy and provides job opportunities.
