Academic Career & Executive Search is pleased to assist Hartwick College in their search for the Director of the Griffiths Center for Collaboration & Innovation (GCCI).

This is a unique opportunity for a design thinking subject matter expert and practitioner to influence the culture of a College, administration, faculty, staff, and student body.  The ideal candidate will be a change agent who demonstrates curiosity, the ability to enable, inspire and motivate individuals and teams, and catalyze change that enhances the College’s progress toward its strategic goals.

Success in this position will be evidenced by the:

  • Measurable increase in the demonstrated capacity of students, faculty, and professional employees to inspire, make, and leverage change to meet their personal goals and the strategic goals of the College.
  • Measurable engagement in meeting the educational needs of the workforce across the region through the development of collaborative partnerships with local employers and governmental agencies.
  • Measurable increase in revenues associated with entrepreneurial efforts that enhance student learning while strengthening the financial base of the College.

The Director of the GCCI will lead and advance a culture of collaboration, innovation, and entrepreneurship at Hartwick College. Success in this position will be the measurable increase in the demonstrated capacity of students and employees to inspire, make, and leverage change to meet their personal goals and the goals of the College, and measurable engagement in meeting the educational needs of the workforce across the region. 

The Griffiths Center for Collaboration & Innovation (GCCI) builds upon Hartwick College’s longstanding commitment to experiential learning, adaptation and creative problem solving, especially and as recently articulated in FlightPath. The Director will inspire innovative thinking, support collaborative learning, and model key outcomes that are reflected in the Hartwick College mission statement, including “curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, personal courage, and an enduring passion for learning.” The Director will lead the identification of new opportunities that enhance regional economic development while providing learning opportunities for Hartwick students and generating new revenue opportunities for the College.  

The Director of the GCCI reports to the President of the College.  The Director will work with the President, the College’s senior leadership team, and others across campus to implement the strategic direction for the Griffiths Center for Collaboration & Innovation.  Among other duties the Director will:

  • Guide the development and delivery of programs and advisory services that support creativity and innovation across campus.
  • Advise and support faculty in their use of design thinking principles when developing and delivering curricula through traditional and alternative media.
  • Develop and deliver workshop programming to increase campus and community exposure to, and understanding of, tools that promote innovative thinking and initiatives within and beyond the classroom.
  • Guide the development, delivery and funding of programs that support creativity and innovation across the campus and with and through our strategic community partners.
  • Collaborate with faculty to support and develop programming for existing Innovation Stations including the College’s FAB(rication)LAB and E(ntrepreneurship) Hub.  Provide strategic oversight and support for these stations.  Catalyze the development of new Innovation Stations. 
  • Examine opportunities for and create programming that supports the delivery of education that meets regional workforce needs. 
  • Explore and create innovative programs that leverage the intellectual capacity of our campus while generating new or increased net positive program revenues for the College.
  • Provide strategic oversight for and support that College’s well-established Center for Craft Food & Beverage and Hartwick’s Grain Innovation Center (opening in fall 2022.) Assist these Centers in fulfilling their missions to strengthen the regional economy through collaborations with business and government while providing learning opportunities for students. Assure that both CCFB and GIC operations generate net positive program related revenues.  
  • Contribute to the career preparation of students through substantive cross‐campus and community collaborations including through the development of strategic partnerships with local, regional, national, and international community partners.

The Director will also: 

  • Administer all activities of the GCCI, including the GCCI budget, and provide supervisory oversight for the CCFB, GIC and other staff as appropriate.
  • Assist in and provide active support for the full implementation of Hartwick’s FlightPath initiatives as these initiatives evolve and relate to the work of the GCCI.   
  • Create and promote the GCCI’s services and programs with faculty, students, and community partners. 
  • Act as a catalyst for collaborative thinking, creativity and problem-solving across the campus.
  • Develop a meaningful and substantive collaboration with the office of Career Services to increase the number of student engagements, including internship opportunities, with entrepreneurs and innovators.  Help to identify a growing number of post‐graduate employment opportunities in industries and professions that require workers with creativity, strong collaboration skills and experience with refined problem-solving skills. 
  • Work collaboratively with the College’s Institutional Advancement office to identify funding sources to support paid internship opportunities and other experience related learning opportunities.  When appropriate, contribute to the development of funding applications.
  • Work collaboratively with the College’s Institutional Advancement office to identify private, corporate and foundation sources for funding of GCCI programming and operations.  When appropriate, contribute to the development of funding applications.
  • Assure and oversee the College’s participation in Stanford’s University Innovation Fellows or similar program and mentor the students who qualify for the program, encouraging their success in program related initiatives.  Advise these participants in their development of a group of Student Ambassadors who will advocate for and support greater innovation and collaboration on campus. 
  • Support all future College planning efforts. 
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the President.


About the Griffiths Center for Collaboration and Innovation (GCCI):

The GCCI serves as an umbrella for three on-campus, learning Innovation spaces:

1.  Hartwick’s Makerspace 

2.  Hartwick’s Fabrication Lab (Fab Lab)

3.  Hartwick’s planned entrepreneurship hub

All three platforms are part of the College’s overall strategy of further enhancing Hartwick’s very interdisciplinary approach to learning to make our students more marketable problem solvers in a tech savvy world. Students benefit by connecting what they are learning in the classroom with real needs in the community. The GCCI is an idea incubator and an instigator of innovative approaches to academic coursework both for credit and not for credit.

The GCCI director also provides oversight for the College’s Center for Craft Food and Beverage and soon to open Grain Innovation Center.  These Centers provide testing services and education for breweries, malthouses, growers, millers, and bakers.   These enterprises provide practical learning experiences for Hartwick students.

Sally Griffiths Herbert ’88 and Tim Herbert provided the backbone of support for the GCCI, named in honor of her father. 


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Evidence of familiarity with, and the successful application of, design and/or systems thinking methods and ability to illustrate and teach design thinking principles
  • Proven record of accomplishment in initiating and leading new projects, programs and/or product development, in a commercial, not for profit or governmental setting
  • Creative and open-minded, demonstrate the ability to collaborate with, lead, and motivate others
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to motivate and influence others
  • Excellent oral, presentation and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated evidence of resourcefulness and flexibility, outreach, and team building


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a chosen field of study.
  • Experience in an academic setting that includes direct engagement with students, faculty, and others. Hartwick College will consider non-academic candidates who can demonstrate a clear understanding of academic culture and commitment to student success
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Career and workforce development experience including the ability to interface with area businesses regarding their needs and how to best prepare students to meet those needs
