Steeped in a rich history of American Indian origin, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke seeks a visionary leader and prominent advocate who understands and can provide the strategic direction necessary to meet the evolving needs of an academic library while continuing to serve and honor that historical culture.

Leading a team of twenty, the Dean of the Mary Livermore Library reports directly to the Provost and is responsible for providing strong leadership for all library services and establishing a shared vision and developing strategic priorities that align with the mission, vision, and goals of the University.

The successful candidate brings a proven track record of library growth along with a keen understanding of how to integrate new and emerging technologies with traditional library resources and services to best serve students, faculty and the community.

The successful candidate will promote a collaborative environment within the library, across the university and the UNC system, and throughout the community. They should have a record of effective academic leadership, scholarship, teaching, and public service. Strong communication skills and the ability to foster a collaborative environment is essential.

The Mary Livermore Library's budget is approximately $2.8 million. It contains 200,000 print volumes with access to around 438,294 licensed ebooks. Additionally, it provides access to over 290 academic databases. The many specialized services offered include reference, instruction, and outreach/distance education. Our Special Collections materials focus on topics of local interest and significance, such as the Lumbee Indians, Robeson County, and the University itself.

Primary Functions and Responsibilities:

· Oversees all library services, functions, and personnel
· Manages the budget and finances
· Implements and maintains appropriate policies, procedures, and practices
· Advocates for the library on campus, within the UNC System, and in the community
· Pursues external funding through grants and private fundraising.
· Provides appropriate mentoring, guidance, and resources for faculty and staff development

Minimum Qualifications:

· Master’s degree in library science from ALA-accredited program
· Five or more years of progressively responsible administrative experience
· Demonstrated experience with budgeting and a record of sound fiscal management
· Possesses knowledge of and experience with current and emerging library technologies, such
  as Ex Libris’ ALMA
· Evidence of scholarly and professional achievement
· Evidence of planning for and managing a complex library operation


Preferred Qualifications:
· Terminal degree in appropriate discipline
· A knowledge and appreciation of the library’s role in supporting faculty and students with
  online courses
· Experience serving diverse populations
· Experience with grant writing and fundraising

In part because of its small community setting, UNC Pembroke is also one of the safest campuses in the nation.
