Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) seeks an energetic, collegial, accomplished, and experienced scholar and leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences (COAS). The Dean will serve as the chief academic officer for the College with responsibility for developing a compelling and comprehensive vision for the College’s future. Although it is the youngest university of the Texas A&M University System, A&M-SA is on an upward trajectory in pursuit of academic excellence, student success, research growth, creativity and community service. The Dean must serve as a vocal leader and advocate toward these goals, working in collaboration with College stakeholders to create an ambitious vision for the College’s future.

The Dean reports directly to the Provost and leads a college with four academic departments, eleven undergraduate degree programs, and two graduate programs. COAS is also responsible for delivering the bulk of the University’s general education core curriculum. As the largest and fastest growing of A&M-SA’s three academic colleges, COAS will look to the Dean’s leadership in critical decisions about future undergraduate and graduate programs, community and research collaborations, and externally funded enterprises. The successful candidate will step into a dynamic and growing college with exciting opportunities for academic excellence and innovation.

The Dean will be responsible for the academic, research, and outreach leadership of the College, as well as the management of its human and financial resources. The Dean has responsibility for leading the faculty and staff to work cohesively to advance the College as a whole and represents the College on and off the campus, including alumni, donors, and other external stakeholders. The Dean takes the lead in strategic planning and in solidifying and implementing the vision, mission, and goals for the College.

With its focus on the arts and sciences, COAS has the opportunity to lead the university in advancing academic excellence, and the Dean is expected to seize this unique opportunity. COAS is exploring numerous interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaborations, and the Dean is expected to provide support and guidance in this critical area. The Dean must develop a deep understanding of the energetic community of scholars and teachers that exist within the COAS departments and how to connect these strengths across disciplines and departments.

Responsibilities:

The Dean is expected to lead the College’s efforts in:
  • Advancing strategic and academic planning to support an ambitious strategy for the future;
  • Recruiting and retaining diverse and excellent faculty and staff committed to student success and scholarly achievement;
  • Developing new opportunities for student access to research/scholarship/creative activity and partnership with the faculty;
  • Advancing academic excellence through a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of college work;
  • Strengthening interdisciplinary connections among the units of the College to promote growth in research/scholarship/creative activity of significance;
  • Supporting and growing the University’s research mission, the Dean will advance the faculty’s scholarly activities and external sponsorship growth, and encourage and advocate for interdisciplinary opportunities that increase impact;
  • Enhancing the development of existing and new high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs in the College;
  • Developing and sustaining community partnerships that provide experiential learning opportunities while enhancing the University’s research and service missions;
  • Providing leadership in the area of fundraising and external relations as well as spearheading broader advancement efforts in communications and engagement with external stakeholders;
  • Communicating a compelling vision of the College and its programs to prospective students, alumni, foundations, industry, and other external partners;
  • Participating in campus-wide policy development and decision-making;
  • Providing leadership to the faculty in developing, maintaining, and improving high-quality programs of instruction, research, creative activity, outreach, and public service.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

A&M-SA’s next Dean will play a pivotal role in the future growth of COAS as well as ensuring the College’s support of the University’s advancement as an institution of higher learning dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate will possess a distinguished record of academic accomplishment and service, superior interpersonal and management skills, and in addition will possess:
  • An earned doctorate/terminal degree in a discipline represented in COAS from an accredited university and administrative and/or leadership experience in a research university;
  • An outstanding record of scholarly achievement and reputation commensurate with appointment as full professor in one of the departments in the College;
  • Experience as a seasoned, decisive leader with strong organizational and consensus-building skills, integrity, and the ability to inspire and lead faculty with diverse interests and scholarly approaches;
  • A history of providing students with a high-quality educational experience and promptly addressing issues related to student success;
  • A demonstrated ability to developing multidisciplinary programs and foster external partnerships to create an outwardly looking educational environment for faculty and students;
  • A demonstrated ability to lead, including management of human and financial resources; the ability to work with faculty to develop a vision and plans for the future in an environment of shared governance; the ability to function well as part of the campus leadership team;
  • A commitment to fostering and sustaining a culturally diverse academic environment; a demonstrated ability to relate effectively to a wide variety of people of diverse backgrounds, including an understanding and respect for cultural, ethnic, gender, sexuality, and individual differences; and,
  • Integrity and high ethical standards.

About Texas A&M-San Antonio:

A&M-SA is a growing, dynamic university reflective of the diverse and heritage-rich community it serves. Founded as the first upper-division institution of higher education in South San Antonio, A&M-SA today is a comprehensive four-year university offering affordable, high-quality education.

From fall 2009, when A&M-SA became a standalone university, to fall 2017, enrollment grew 340 percent. The university currently serves some 6,500 students and has more than 11,000 alumni. The student body is 60 percent female and 72 percent Hispanic, and approximately 77 percent of students are the first in their families to attend college.

San Antonio ranked #14 on U.S. News & World Report's 2017 list of the 100 Best Places to Live. The cost of living is 36% less than that of New York. In addition, Texas does not have an income tax.

The city provides opportunities and venues for every entertainment area, including food, music, sports, theater, and art. San Antonio has more than 14,000 acres of scenic parks and hosts over 50 major events and festivals throughout the year.

Though the city has a laid-back character, it offers a thriving job market with growing opportunities in biosciences, cybersecurity, avionics, renewable energy, and manufacturing industries, including headquarters for Frost National Bank, USAA, H-E-B, and Southwest Research Institute. The unemployment rate is less than the national average.

South Texas Medical Center, comprising 900 acres, is the site of 45 medically-related institutions; individual medical, dental and nursing schools, five institutions of higher education, 12 hospitals, and five specialty institutions. San Antonio is also the home of Brooke Army Medical Center.
