Chadron State College seeks a strategic and engaging online and faculty development professional to serve in this vital role. The ideal candidate brings proven experience in online programs and faculty training; curriculum design and assessment; and innovative pedagogy utilizing online, hybrid and face-to-face delivery methods.
The successful candidate is an outward facing, highly collaborative leader who, working across campus, brings a hands-on approach to design, monitor and maintain quality enhancements to online learning as well as organizing and fostering a climate of faculty professional development. The next AVPTL understands the future of online learning and instructional design as well as supporting the needs of a diverse group of faculty and students.
This position reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and supervises 2 Instructional Technology and Design Specialists and additional Instructional Technologists.
This position provides strategic vision, direction, development, alignment, implementation, promotion, evaluation and oversight of the Office of Teaching and Learning for the institution. This encompasses two components:
1) Online Programs: creates the vision, strategic planning, and monitoring of all online education for the college; The OPE implements, supports and expands the online education programming.
2) Teaching and Learning Center (TLC). The TLC provides instructional support for faculty; it organizes faculty development events that explore a variety of learning theories and pedagogical methods and administers faculty development related programs and opportunities.
Essential Duties:
1) Online Programs
- Provide vision, leadership, and operational management for the marketing, support and ongoing development of technology-enabled online initiatives and academic programs
- Coordinate training sessions and develop resources to engage faculty on the use of e-learning technology and best practices in online learning
- Ensure effective support for online instruction
- Provide leadership and oversight for instructional design and quality user friendly online courses
- Partner with the academic college deans to ensure viable and relevant academic undergraduate and graduate programs for adult learners, and maintain collaborative relationship with external PDU provider
- Partner with Deans, CIO, VPAA, Department Chairs, Information Technology, Student Services, Athletics, and various committees to develop policy, procedure, and IT services to support teaching and learning programs, projects, and resources.
- Demonstrate the value of cultural competence through participation and development of diversity and inclusivity efforts
- Identify, design, coordinate, promote and deliver innovative and relevant faculty and staff professional development programs including but not limited to: workshops, or individualized instruction on course design, and active and collaborative learning strategies.
- Assist academic departments and faculty with course design and curriculum development to engage a variety of instructional delivery methods, and advance teaching and learning skills via integrated and evidence-based approach such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
- Promote faculty scholarship of teaching, learning, and engagement; Foster faculty participation in national teaching and learning conferences.
- Lead teaching and learning initiatives, including promotion of strong pedagogical approaches, high-impact practices, interdisciplinary team-taught courses, OER, appropriate and effective use of technology.
- Promote the Center as a place for networking, mentoring, and sharing of best practices among faculty.
- Nurture a community of learners, including New Faculty Orientation and mentoring for full-time and part-time instructors.
Secondary Duties:
- Foster an engagement in research in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
- Enhance a learner-centered environment engaged in critical self-reflection and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree
- Higher education teaching experience
- Five or more years of leadership experience, such as dean-, associate dean-, or director-level appointments in one or more of the following areas related to online instruction: instructional design, instructional technology, faculty development, and teaching and learning programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A general knowledge of learning theory, pedagogical methods, learner-centered environments, interdisciplinary team-taught courses, high impact practices, open educational resources (OER), course assessment, e-learning/e-pedagogy, new media production, learning management systems (e.g. Sakai, Canvas, Moodle, etc.), learning commons, academic technology resources and library services.
- Key attributes include effective and collegial leadership, strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to develop self-directed team-based leadership in others.
- In-depth knowledge in at least one of the two areas of supervision (Teaching and Learning Technology or Teaching and Learning Center).

Founded in 1911, Chadron State College is an open-admission public institution committed to teaching and learning. Chadron State College is the only four-year college serving the western half of Nebraska. The region served is the nexus of western Nebraska, High Plains, and the Frontier and Remote (FAR) communities. Chadron and other towns in the college’s service region are classified as FAR level three communities because of the distance from an area of more than 10,000 people. Only about 1.4% of the U.S. population resides in FAR level three communities. The position helps to support 95 full time faculty in addition to adjunct faculty.
