Dean of Robert B. Willumstad School of Business

Adelphi University seeks a dynamic, strategic, entrepreneurial and collaborative leader to provide innovative leadership to the AACSB-accredited Robert B. Willumstad School of Business. The Willumstad School of Business consists of four academic departments, Accounting & Law, Decision Sciences & Marketing, Finance & Economics, and Management, and awards both bachelor’s and master’s degrees.  

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is an advocate for the School, will conceptualize and achieve strategic initiatives that build on the School’s prior growth and innovation, provide leadership in the areas of innovation and technology, fundraising, alumni relations, external engagement, and work with diverse team of faculty, staff and students. The Dean of the Willumstad School of Business joins an active and collaborative Deans Council, and will work collaboratively with other Deans, the Provost and Executive Leadership in providing academic leadership to the School.  

Through the University’s shared governance structures, the dean is responsible for oversight of all curricula within the School, AACSB accreditation, program development, faculty recruitment and support, and student recruitment and retention. The dean will collaborate with the Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations, work with the academic administration to develop and implement interdisciplinary and interprofessional programs and initiatives, and will oversee assessment and accreditation-related activities, budget preparation, and oversight and supervision of support staff. 


  • The successful candidate must meet the requirements of a tenured full professor at Adelphi. 

  • Successful candidates will demonstrate an authentic sense of humanity, care and respect for all individuals within the university and its communities; value and exhibit honest and ethical behavior; and be willing to listen to and consider differing points of view.  


  • Ability to collaborate with the Provost and the senior leadership on the formulation of a vision, policies, and implementation of sustainable change to ensure that the School will meet the University’s educational, research and administrative goals.  

  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity, equity and inclusion, and achievement in increasing campus diversity.  

  • A record of progressively responsible academic and administrative leadership roles in business higher education including demonstrated ability in managing a complex academic organization and effectively interacting with faculty, staff, students and external constituents.  

  • Experience with leadership in the advancement and fundraising activities and programs related to business higher education, and in acquiring funding to support all facets of the School. Experience developing and maintaining philanthropic relationships, cultivating long-term giving, and managing major donors with an interest in supporting the School.  

  • Ability to engage the alumni population in visioning, networking, mentoring students, and fundraising.  

  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain and reward high-quality faculty, and a flexible, engaged and open management style that delegates authority, empowers staff and sets high expectations; a commitment to support faculty efforts in scholarship, creative work and teaching.  

  • Dedication to faculty engagement and shared governance; willingness to engage in thoughtful discussion with faculty to envision and implement institutional change.  

  • The resolve to confront challenges and make difficult decisions, negotiate conflicts and demonstrate and promote integrity and high ethical standards within the institution.  

  • Collaborative skills in teaming with colleagues and working with a unionized, innovative, energetic faculty, as well as with unionized staff; ability to work collegially across the institution, build relationships and motivate, mobilize and energize others to work together. 

Experience/Knowledge in the Field  

  • Strong academic, research or creative scholarship and experience in the field of business.  

  • Experience and success in the development and maintenance of a network of internship and career placements for students.  

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute an institutional agenda for the School; ensure that the School keeps pace with best practices both internal and external to the University.  

  • Experience with accrediting bodies both regional and specialized. Experience with AACSB accreditation requirements preferred.  

  • Experience with business faculty in their role as educators, scholars and academic collaborators supporting scholarship, teaching, and learning.  

  • Experience with the evaluation of faculty for appointment, award of tenure and promotion.  

  • Administrative acumen, including knowledge of financial planning and budgets, strategic planning and implementation.  

  • A demonstrated concern for and support of student success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. 

Innovation/Strategic Vision  

  • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans, act as an advocate for these initiatives and serve as the primary communicator of the results of the vision and planning to the Adelphi community.  

  • Experience with undergraduate and graduate business degree programs within the context and connected to a liberal arts university.  

  • Familiarity with evolving perceptions and national trends related to academic business programs.  

  • Development of academic programming at both the Garden City campus and Manhattan Center.  

  • Demonstrated understanding of the role of innovation and technology in developing pedagogies, including online pedagogies, in the contemporary education of business students.  

  • Demonstrated commitment to innovative student services. 


Adelphi University located in Garden City since 1929 was the first private, coeducational university on Long Island. Adelphi was first founded as Adelphi Academy in 1863 and originally located in Brooklyn.
