Academic Career & Executive Search is pleased to assist Elmira College in their search for a Vice President of Finance & Administration (VPFA).

Elmira College seeks a sophisticated, highly skilled senior financial executive with a strong finance background to serve in this critical and highly visible role. This cabinet level position reports directly to the President while interacting widely across the campus. Elmira College desires a charismatic leader who delivers a hands-on approach to leadership, operations and problem solving and will work seamlessly with all levels of the institution including the board, senior administration, faculty, staff and students. The successful candidate is an actively involved, outward facing, transparent communicator and consensus builder who engenders trust.

The VPFA serves as an advisor to the President on all fiscal, budgetary, and business matters. S/he is a member of the President’s Cabinet and is staff to the Board of Trustees Audit Committee and Budget and Finance Committee, including its Investment Subcommittee on endowment management.

This position has executive-level oversight for business, financial, and administration functions of the College with responsibility for controllership functions, payroll and budgeting, physical facilities, construction & planning, information systems and services, procurement services, human resources, IT, organizational development, external contracts, and other related duties. The ideal candidate brings significant experience managing complex budgets, knowledge of best practices, operations and systems and excellent budgeting and financial planning abilities.

Elmira College is undergoing exciting changes as its recent $20 million partnership with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) prepares to open this summer. Additionally, Elmira College is partnering with a local developer to construct a new 115-unit apartment complex that will provide housing for LECOM students.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the senior finance and administration leader serving on the President cabinet as the chief financial advisor to the president, the campus leadership team as well as interacting with all departments across campus
  • Guide the College through financial decision-making and stewardship of financial resources by establishing and maintaining strong internal control policies and procedures
  • Provide oversight and leadership in the development of annual operating and capital budgets, including forecasting and analysis of key financial ratios
  • Remain current on the best practices and evolving laws and regulations governing higher education financial management
  • Plan, coordinate, review and control the operations of finance and administration areas, ensuring all transactions are in compliance with and in support of the policies, mission, and strategic plan of Elmira College
  • Provide leadership and oversight of the following units: Controller’s Office, Human Resources, Facilities Management, Procurement and Bookstore, Information Technology
  • Ability to handle multiple, competing priorities
  • Serve as the primary manager of the relationship between the College’s dining services vendor and vendors related to capital improvements to the campus.

Secondary Minimum Duties:
  • Annually review, edit and update the Graduate Assistant Handbook
  • Represent the College at, and attend social functions as requested
  • Assist in employee complaints and investigations regarding discrimination, harassment, employment law, confidentiality and other policies and regulations as needed or requested

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration or in Accounting, or comparable graduate degree is strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in increasingly responsible positions in financial systems and operations, including successful fiscal, administrative leadership, and managerial experience in senior level positions in education, non-profit, or business operations
  • Proven experience as a collaborative senior finance professional with comprehensive understanding of strategic, administrative, business, and fiscal management for a higher education institution, or other not-for-profit or other allied field
  • Ability to analyze and present complex issues and financial reports to diverse groups of professionals
  • Experience in budget development, purchasing, accounting, accounts payable and receivable, institutional insurance, risk mitigation, investment of funds, administration of state and federal funds, cost study analysis, and internal auditing
  • Strong attention to detail
