The VPOSPIE will serve as a key member of the Provost’s leadership team and have the unique opportunity to serve, guide, and support during this pivotal and historic time. The successful candidate is a data focused, critical thinker who thrives in managing a wide and varied scope of responsibilities and interacting across campus.  

This high profile and well supported leadership position is ideal for a leader who enjoys a multi-faceted role impacting the entire institution with areas of responsibility to include institutional strategic planning, institutional assessment/effectiveness, accreditation, institutional research, system liaison, and overall management of OSPIE. Stepping into an established and robust culture of assessment, the role is well-supported by an already strong assessment leader and team. The next VPOSPIE will have the opportunity to further shape their organization and develop their team including allocations of new positions. 

N.C. A&T enjoys a strong accreditation standing. This position serves as principal liaison to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and ensures that accreditation requirements are incorporated into the planning and evaluation process of the institution and that all new programs are consistent with SACSCOC guidelines. 

The Office of Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness is also responsible for supporting the academic planning process for developing, revising, consolidating, or discontinuing academic programs. 

The VPOSPIE manages two critical roles: strategic planning and institutional effectiveness.  

Areas of direct responsibility and oversight include: 
  1. University planning and assessment 
  2. Student learning quality enhancement planning 
  3. Working with vice chancellors, deans, department chairs, and program coordinators to ensure comprehensive, university-wide planning, assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes and program goals. 

The VPOSPIE provides visionary and effective leadership as well as reliable, complete and understandable data and information to inform decision-making. 

Minimum Requirements 
  • Earned doctorate from an accredited university 
  • Minimum of 10 years of higher education work experience related to assessment, evaluation, program development, strategic planning, or other higher education administration 
  • Evidence of knowledge and capabilities in higher education policy 
  • Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving experience in a complex organization 
  • Understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion associated with national and regional accreditation 
  • Demonstrated skills to manage interdisciplinary teams efficiently and effectively 
  • Experience working in or with colleges and universities 
  • Demonstrated skills in data organization, analytics and interpretation to support a culture of data-informed decision making.
  • Detail oriented with strong communication and writing skills 

Preferred Requirements
  • Successful experience in supervision of diverse staff 
  • Experience with higher education assessment, evaluation, and accreditation 
  • Experience with budget procedures and practices 
  • Experience at a high research institution of at least Carnegie R-2 level 
  • Understanding of contemporary issues faced by academic institutions related to student learning outcomes assessment and accountability expected for accreditation

About the Institution

Located in Greensboro, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) is one of 17 institutions of The University of North Carolina (UNC) System and is an 1890 Land-grant doctoral research institution with a distinction in STEM education. The university is comprised of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences; Deese College of Business and Economics, College of Education; College of Engineering; Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences, College of Science and Technology, and the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, which is in collaboration with The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  The University offers 59 undergraduate degrees, 34 master’s degrees and 11 PhD programs.

The Office of Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (OSPIE) at North Carolina A&T State University is the primary source of official data for the University. Its mission is to foster University effectiveness, including student success, by providing data and analysis for evidence-based decision-making and strategic planning. OSPIE supports student learning assessment, the development and evaluation of academic programs, and institutional accreditation.
